(inner ear inflammation)
The term “labyrinth” simply refers to the inner ear. This area can be divided into two sub-sections, the cochlea and the vestibular system consisting of the vestible and the semi-circular canals (see diagram below).
Any infection or other inflammatory process involving the inner ear is known as Labyrinthitis. This can manifest in either hearing abnormalities, dizziness / vertigo, or both.
Diagnosis and treatment are based on physical examination as well as inner ear testing, often a hearing test (Audiogram) and/or a balance test (ENG) depending on the symptoms.
One potential consequence of this problem, known as Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss, is particarly urgent as it does have the potential to result in permanent hearing loss.
